One requirement of the affordable care act is the individual mandate, which requires most individuals to have health insurance coverage or pay a penalty. This mandate came into effect in January 2014 and was intended to increase the number of people with health insurance and encourage younger and healthier people to participate in the healthcare system. The penalty for not having insurance is a percentage of household income or a flat fee, whichever is greater. However, the individual mandate was repealed in 2019 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
